Originally built in Germany in 1951, Opal became in 2015 the first ship in the world to be installed with a regenerative plugin hybrid-electric propulsion. A special shaped propeller allows recuperating energy back into the batteries whenever the sails are clapped on. This unique and beautiful wooden sailboat from North Sailing is used for whale-watching trips and Greenland experience.

For this fascinating project, ESORO had the responsibility for the overall software control for the drive train: the high-secure drive control, different battery charge modes, the user interface on the captain’s bridge and the safety concept. Furthermore, ESORO designed the waterproof battery-packs including ESORO’s high efficient battery management system (active BMS).

Technical specifications:

  • Power Electric Engine: 120 kW (cont.)
  • Battery: 3 parallel LiFePO4 battery-strings, 600V
  • Capacity: 360 kWh
  • Charging: recuperation, plug-in, auxiliary generator
